Amoeba Light Sculpture

08 December 2023

Wellington City Council approached Anita at ECC to create an illuminated object of interest at the top of Farmers Lane in Wellington City. In collaboration with Michael Warwick from MAW Design, they came up with concepts that incorporate Kaynemaile transparent mesh.

Gaining inspiration from the Vibia Light Ameoba products, they developed the final design of the 4 m-long sculpture. It was fabricated by Durcare NZ in Levin and then transported back to Wellington for painting at Powder Coating Services in Seaview.

Back at a Wellington workshop, they utilised the Hunza LuxR Modux RGBW stainless steel Spotlights and Casambi DMX to Casambi 4 channel dimmers, to be able to address each light and with the help of Ella Pan, create colour changing scene to give the sculpture some fluid movement.

Byron at Howard’s Material Handing provided all the suspension cables and anchorages, and Richard Mayes from Silvester Clark Consulting Engineers was engaged to provide structural calculations.

The installation was done one evening by Dave Scott at City Electricians and his team, and is now a permanent piece of the Wellington Laneway WCC vision.
