A look back at the Tolomeo

25 November 2019

Launched originally in 1987, the iconic Tolomeo is one of the most recognisable lamps today. Its slim silhouette along with tech sophistication remains to gift high design to the desks of architecture and professionals.

The faithful Tolomeo series has developed into a full collection consisting of a wide variety of colours, bases and shades.

Receiving the Compasso d’Oro award in 1989, the award-winning design ensures simplicity, adjustability and comfort. Articulated arms with visible joints control the hidden springs which provide 360-degree rotatability. The light can be directed quickly with the use of just one hand.

Developed by Michele de Lucchi with Giancarlo Fassina, their working relationship continues to this day. The idea behind Tolomeo’s mechanism was conceptualised observing fisherman using wire rope on their rods. A technique used by the traditional fisherman in Apulia.

De Lucchi develops around thirty designs a year, of which only a careful selection leaves his studio and even less make it to the prototype.

The iconic Tolomeo series constantly designs to adapt to new technologies. A few years ago, the Tolomeos received an upgrade with LED technology.
