Heavy Metals
04 October 2016
A new development we noticed this year was the use of raw metals, sometimes tarnished, or simply rough-hewn.
Piet Boon’s Kekke mirror is framed in a strip steel, while Minotti’s sleek Calder sideboard features a soft bronze frame topped with marble and wood.
The Calder Bronze console is an addition to the already successful Calder family designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti. Available in a variety of configurations and finishes, this console is the perfect modern addition to your furniture collection.
Captain Flint designed by Michael Anastassiades is an ingenious and accessible floor lamp, Captain Flint is both an up-lighter, illuminating a space with ambient lighting, while at the same time it can be rotated and directed down to become a companion for reading.
Extra T Table Lamp designed by Michael Anastassiades has a hand-blown opal glass diffuser paired with an aluminium body which creates an elegant and minimalist table lamp.
Gallotti & Radice also took the metal in a glamorous direction, pairing polished brass with glossy black marble, leather and noir-stained timber. Raw brass piping is used to glamorous effect in their Epsilon pendant. The hand burnished brass used in the legs of their Twelve collection side tables provide a beautiful juxtaposition with the gleaming bright brass tops.
A rather more modern rendition of brass is seen in the dynamic Bolle pendants by Giopato and Coombes, where the brass shoots through floating glass bubbles. Single and multiple floor lamps, and a wall and ceiling sconce were added to the Bolle range this year.
Rustica Cabinet designed by Ferruccio Laviani. A series of tables and sideboards characterized by their base made of burnished brass cylinders. The cabinets have 45° joining structure, equipped with doors and drawers. The structures are available in a range of classic finishes.

The delightful Perch Light family by Umut Yamac for Moooi was a hit, featuring brushed brass and a translucent synthetic paper folded into the form of a bird. So be it raw, burnished or with a mirror-like sheen, our designers continue to surprise us with their innovative use of metals.
