Lake House by Evelyn McNamara Architects

Case Studies

The lakeside bunker-like moodiness realized through a topography of place & partition was a key objective in lighting this holiday home in Lake Rotoiti.

The main light source was to be invisible but deliver pockets of light within the structure, as subtly as can be, maintaining the richness and warmth of the timber that lines almost every surface within the home.

Delicate decorative additions in the form of an organic opal glass wall light 'Gregg' by Foscarini in the bathroom, and Graypants 'Wick', a contemporary alternative to a candle, whose lightness and ease of movement makes it the ideal for dusk transitions, were small but not insignificant, final touches.

iGuzzini Laser Blade was recessed throughout the ceilings of the home, offering low glare high output illumination, necessary light but critically, didn't spill into the atmosphere beyond.

‘The relationship humans have with light transcends a functional dimension and is elevated to an emotional one. Lamps are designed to illuminate the world with brightness, but also with the intimacy of shadow: the quality of light cannot solely be measured through its intensity. Blush Lamp makes use of a Led strip and a piece of dichroic glass to cast brightly-tinted reflections on walls to answer to the lack of colour saturation during winter months. With its sober design and meticulous use of light and colour, Blush Lamp recreates the indoor memory of a long summer day.’

Master of Minimalism

News & Events

Arrangements is a modular system of geometric light elements that could be combined in different ways, creating multiple compositions into individual chandeliers. Each unit simply attaches onto the previous one as if resting, balancing perfectly as part of a glowing chain.

Anastassiades says, 'I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between Lighting and Jewelry. Starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies. I’m challenged in how the delicate nature of something small can be translated spatially and still manage to retain its preciousness in the way materials are presented. It is no coincidence that the word ‘pendant’ has a double meaning. Existing both as a piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain worn round the neck, and a light designed to hang from the ceiling.'

Milan

For the third year running Moooi took over a 1,700 m2 warehouse space and transformed it in their unique theatrical style into something magical. This year artistic photos from Rahi Rezvani and newly launched Moooi carpets provided the backdrop to the collection.

The playfulness of the collection always makes me smile. Arion, for example, is not a child’s rocking horse but an adult-sized, limited edition rocking unicorn and in case you missed the face on the Monster Chairs previously they now jump out at you in bright embroidery – also limited edition.

Moooi Carpets has been launched as a separate company, which uses a super high definition printer to produce multicoloured patterns and photo realistic prints. Marcel Wanders, Neri & Hu, Studio Job, Front, Ross Lovegrove and others have contributed their designs, but you can custom make your own carpet too.

We finished the day at an exclusive party in Minotti’s showroom, with a live band and dance floor.

Paolo Leonardo is interested in portrayals of women in our consumer society, drawing on an immense archive of advertising images that show modern woman in all her stereotypes. The artist glimpses a potential meaning in certain posters and photographs, and a kind of magical power in some, that leads him to establish a dialogue between the image and his painting.

Westfield Food Court

A key architectural feature of this house is the concrete walls imprinted with rough sawn timber. Highlighting this feature internally and externally was central to the lighting brief. ECC provided all the internal and external lighting for the house.
