Maurer was born on May 12, 1932 in Reichenau, Germany. He is an industrial designer who specialises in lighting installation and lamps. After an apprenticeship as a typesetter he studied graphic design in his home country. In 1960 Ingo spent 3 years in the United States as a freelance designer before moving back to Germany in 1963.
Since 1989, his design and objects have been presented in a series of exhibitions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1993). Maurer created many objects using LEDs, the first being the lighting object Bellissima Brutta in 1996. In 2001 he presented a table lamp with LEDs with the name EL.E.Dee. Since 2006, he is also experimenting with organic light emitting diode (Organic LEDs), presenting two objects in 2006, and a table lamp as limited edition. As well as participating in various forms of literature, he has also won multiple awards. Within these awards includes, Georg Jensen award in 2003, Royal Designer of Industry, Royal society of Arts in 2006 and Compasso d’Oro, category career in 2011. He even has a design of his (A Bulb, 1969) that has been included in the Museum of Modern Art.
